How Does America Use Its Corn Today?
Today’s corn crop is mainly used for bio-fuels, roughly 40 percent of the United States. corn is used for ethanol and as animal feed (roughly 36 percent of U.S. corn, plus distillers grains left over from ethanol production, is fed to cattle, pigs and chickens). Much of the remainder is exported. Only a tiny fraction of the national corn crop is directly used for food for Americans, much of that for high-fructose corn syrup.
Because of provisions in the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996, corn acreage in the United States has increased from a Government-mandated low of 60.2 million planted acres in 1983 to more than 90 million in 2015.
The Act permitted farmers to make their own crop planting decisions based on the most profitable crop for a given year.
Success can come at a cost
Mass production means more profits, more mouths fed and more available products for to buy and sell on the open market.
This all sounds great and we all love a bargain, cheap food can only be a good thing? However intensive farming can could possibly harbour a hidden dark side, and be a detriment to bio diversity, in some cases leaving acres of desolate parched soil where the elements have blown once rich fertile land into dessert. However there is hope for the future with the use of proper agricultural measures implemented that help preserve the quality of the land.
Some farmers have adopted measures such as planting different species of flowers and hedges surrounding the harvest area this helps protect wild life, encurrages bees to work there magic. Other measures include creating small run offs laced with hay to reduce the destructive force wind and rain droplets against soil.
Why Bio Diversity Is Essential
Bees insects birds and many more animals rely upon a bio diversity to survive and flourish, wild bee populations have suffered world wild loses due to diseases such as Varroa mites, some scientist claim there is evidence that pesticides known as neonicotinoids may effect the way bees navigate causing bee deaths to rise.
Examples of Neonicotinoids
There is also know as substance know as Fipronil, a systemic pesticide, which works in a very similar way to neonicotinoids.
Neonicotinoids are neurotoxins that act on information processing (and hence ability to function or perform tasks), by affecting a specific neural pathway common in invertebrates. In other words, the nervous system is attacked.
Bee Populations Dramatic Decline Seen All Over The World
In France, where dramatic honeybee losses were observed, and honey production dropped from 40,000 to 25,000 tons between the years 1995-2001, it was noted that these events occurred after the neonicotinoid called imidacloprid was applied as a seed dressing to sunflower crops.
Varroa mites had already been present in France for some years, actually since 1982, yet beekeepers had not witnessed such collapses until after neonicotinoids were introduced on the market.
While the number of feed grain farms (those that produce corn, sorghum, barley, and/or oats) in the United States has declined in recent years, the acreage per corn farm has risen. Moreover, the number of large corn farms (with more than 500 acres) has increased over time, while the number of small corn farms (with less than 500 acres) has fallen.
Corn production has also risen over time, as higher yields followed improvements in technology (seed varieties, fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery) and in production practices (reduced tillage, irrigation, crop rotations, and pest management systems).
Wheat is produced in almost every state in the United States, and is the principal cereal grain grown in the country. The type and quantity vary between regions. The United States is ranked third in production volume of wheat, with almost 58 million tons produced in the 2012–2013 growing season, behind only China and India. (But the combined production of all European Union nations is larger than that of China.) The United States ranks first in crop export volume; almost 50% of its total wheat production is exported.
Eat Right For Your Needs
Breakfast cereal can be quick and convenient but be careful of high sugared products a quick check on the back will tell you all you need to know.
Be imaginative with your morning meals, they can be prepared the evening before to save time and they don’t have to come from a box.
Think about your five a day, could you add one or two along side or instead of your usual breakfast?
Why not spice things become a little adventurous, there are literally thousands of foods available for us to sink our teeth into, keep breakfast as interchangeable as any other meal time, breakfast should be as unique as you are why stick to the same old dull routine.
