HOW CAN MY FAMILY AND I INCREASE OUR ACTIVITY LEVEL TOGETHER?

This is an interesting question, we are often asked on a weekly basis. Children learn habits from parents, siblings, teachers, adults of authority.

If your children see that you are active, and eat well, then often your children will follow suit.

Physical activity helps children grow strong bones, maintain a healthy weight, and discover the world around them, best of all its fun being active as a family.

Families that stay active together will benefit from a positive healthy attitude towards new environments, sleep better, communicate more effectively, and will be more likely to stay motivated to be more active when benefits are being felt.

We at GM-Fitness understand that days are long, and sometimes taking the easy way out once you come in from work is all that you want to do, we understand your tired, your hungry your children are screaming- Please do not opt for the microwave meal, the sound of the play station being turned on.

Occasional gaming can be good for cognitive development however young minds need stimulation, interaction both socially and emotionally. Opting to leave your children stare


at a flickering screen maybe an easy choice but in the long run could create bad habits for both you and your children, which may lead to inactivity, poor communication and impact them in the future.

Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle can often be seen as a challenge especially to new parents.

As Parents/ or partners it is important to instil positive lifestyle choices in our children from a young age, these building blocks will help towards positive focus on health and a life time of regular activity.

10 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR ACTIVITY LEVEL WITH YOUR CHILDREN.

1) Plant your own food, get your little ones involved, this will lead to a feeling of accomplishment for all of you.

2) Sign you and your child up to a sports program. This could be anything from your family attending karate to a painting class, keep your mind stimulated as well as working up a sweat.

3) Follow a home body-weight exercise plan, this way your children/ family can join in, there is then no need to worry about child care, you all get to spend some time together sweating, which could result in bedtime becoming easier.

4) Plan cook nights, where everyone participates in helping prepare the evening meal from scratch this will educate you and your whole family about all the delicious foods available, each week someone different decides what is on the menu.

5) Walk to work, walk to school, or if that is out of the question take a walk at some point during the day, the great thing about the outdoors is that any stress from the day will be lost when you are absorbing the beauty that lives all around you.

6) Lead by example, Children model their parent’s behaviour, if you eat junk food, spend exorbitant amount of time on the computer/ watch Tv/ rarely exercise, you can not be surprised when your children follow suit.

7) Build a tree-house/ Den. In your garden or if you do not have a garden make an indoor Den, this will spark tons of imagination, Fitness and Fun together as a Family.

8) Visit a national park= Exercise and Education and being in nature is a perfect way to learn, relax and unwind.

9) Cycle on Saturdays. Pop on your high visibility gear, be a fashion misfit with that light house glowing helmet, but do it with pride.

10) Every weekend schedule an activity in to your diary, this could be anything from Football, Tennis, swimming- Active families are often happy families.
